Billing, tax & payments

Why am I being charged sales tax, and on what?

L&B collects New Jersey sales tax at 6.625%. For a mailing, New Jersey taxes it based on where the mail is DELIVERED — so a mailing to New Jersey addresses is taxable, and material delivered to recipients outside New Jersey is exempt. Design and creative work is not taxed.

L&B policy

L&B is registered in New Jersey only, and collects no other state’s sales tax.

What is taxed on a mailing

  • Printing — taxable for the New Jersey portion.
  • Mail processing (addressing, bundling, USPS prep) — taxable for the New Jersey portion.
  • Postage we bill you — taxable where the processing service is taxable. New Jersey treats it as part of the sale rather than as a pass-through.
  • Design and creative — not taxed.

USPS requirement

The postage point surprises people, so it is worth being plain: this is New Jersey’s rule for printed advertising mail, not an L&B markup. Postage is billed at what it costs.

If your mailing goes partly to New Jersey and partly elsewhere, the tax is calculated on the New Jersey share of the mailing rather than on the whole thing.
